    Dear Trish,

I am so deeply sorry. I know there are no words that make sense of this, especially when life had just opened into a new chapter for you both.

Barry was a good man — steady, kind, and quietly strong. I will always be grateful for the way you and he stood by me during a very difficult time. That meant more than I ever properly said.

Please know there is no expectation to reply or respond. I just wanted you to know that you are very much in my thoughts, and that I am holding you with care as you find your footing through this.

If at any point you need practical help, company, or simply someone to sit with you — I am here.

    With love,
    Cazzie

The world will be a little less bright with Baz’s passing.

Great memories of sailing with Baz…spending more time in the water than on top of it, and Baz’s rousing waking up of illegally parked sleeping campings at Waterfall Creek.

    Forever young at heart…

What a blow and shock to family and many good friends.Great workmate for many years and our group had many great tramps in the hills outside of work hours.
Was always good for a bit of cheek and give a little banta whenever he was able to.
    Rest in peace !!

Absolutely shocked, never looked a day older every time I saw him. Some great memories playing rugby for Excelsior and cricket for Woodstock, a few tramping trips and many days skiing, will never forget the infamous “Bazzas Budget Tour” ski trip when we ended up sleeping under some pine trees in Wanaka and Methven, but hey as Bazza said ” it was a cheap trip”!! Thinking of you Trish, Tim, Nicole, Sam and Greta at this terrible time.

So sorry to hear of Barry’s passing. As Murray recounts, I have found memories of one of ‘Bazza’s Budget Tours with Barry, Murray Marsh and me. And yes, sleeping under the trees in Wanaka, and next morning, sneaking over to the camping ground showers at sparrows before heading up the Trebble Cone.

When I first got to Hoki in the late 70’s, Barry took me under his tramping-wing. I have fond memories of many trips into the scrub with him, and playing rugby for X’s. I don’t think I ever thanked him for that.

Heartbreaking. Our memories are full of laughs- whether it was Excelsior rugby trips, Europe, skiing in Wanaka, Broken River and Mt Hutt, picnics in the hills, a million conversations, holidaying in Hanmer … Blessed to have you in our lives Bazza. We are devastated for you all and also for Bazza not having more time. Love to you all- Giffy, Annie, Jack and Emily

An unbelievable piece of news, condolences to Trish and family at this difficult time, I was so pleased to catch up with Baz in Okarito at the end of the whitebait season, we certainly caught up on old times past and current events over a couple of hours and a couple of cups of tea. You will be sadly missed but remembered well. RIP Baz.

Sad and shocked to hear of Barry’s untimely passing. Condolences to the family. As others have recognised, a stoic and reliable partner in any trip to the outdoors. In hearing this news from Warren Godfrey, the two of us could not but help recount the memories of an epic trip with Barry over Farquhason Saddle and out the Kokatahi long after the route down the latter had fallen into disrepair. A trip that tested us all while making memories forever.
