Of Wanaka; 23 April 1936 – 5 September 2021. Beloved husband, dad, and grandad; nomadic engineer; West Coast character; man of scruples. We tip our hats to you, Dad. Rest, finally, in peace. Messages to Harold’s tribute page at www.thompsonfd.co.nz.
A Funeral Service for Harold will be held in the Thompson Riverside Chapel, 88 Gibson Quay, Hokitika on Saturday 11th September, commencing at 11 am.
So sorry to read of the death of Harold. Please accept our deepest condolences at this sad time.
I am wondering who Harold’s parents were and his family tree..
I descend from John Murfitt (married Mary Ann Topp)who arrived in Woodend mid 1800s. One of his sons was my great grand father Harry Murfitt; my grandfather and father were both George Harold Murfitt.
I have traced the paternal side of my family tree back to the mid 1500s. I am guessing Harold descended from John Murfitt too. Harold was a family name along with George.
Regards
Hi Corin. Harold’s father was Claude Murfitt who I met. Claude was the child of Gertrude but was raised or adopted by his grandparents, namely the very JW Murfitt who arrived aged 3 in 1859
To Harold’s family, my condolences. Harold and your lovely mother made us welcome at Beacon Point some years ago. He was a dignified gentleman, like Claude. If you’d like to know more of the family background, contact Corin or me. I’m at [email protected]
Our sincere sympathy to you all. We have many happy and fun memories of Harold and Anne over the years of our families’ interactions. Harold will welcome the relief of his release from memory lockdown I’m sure. We remember the barbeque in the rain (with umbrellas) as Harold busily cooked and related his latest adventures in the Middle East, their wonderful hospitality in Wanaka and the work and forethought that went into building their magnificent home.
May he rest in peace and may you all get together and celebrate both his and Anne’s extraordinary lives.
Hi Roy. I was at St Bedes with Harold. RIP.
Can you give me the married name of his daughter Kathy who lives in Sydney?
I would like make contact.

To Harold’s family, sincere condolences from the Jellie family. Claude and Melva were regular visitors to the farm at Arahura.
In later years Harold maintained contact with my mother Win Jellie in Hokitika before she passed on and often visited cousin Gary in Sewell St on his trips back to the Coast. Harold and his parents live on the memories of the Jellies.
